Each weekday morning, I park my car And say hi to Jorge As he sweeps the sidewalk And rakes the leaves in front Of the nursing home down The street from the the synagogue That houses my daily minyan. He smiles back, continuing to Sweep or rake as I walk pass, Prayer shawl and phylactery bag in hand, And replies “Nice day, good morning”. A cheerful way to enter the house Of prayer and study especially During this penitential week When we list and recite More vehemently than usual The various transgression for which we Should atone, striking gently Our chests as we chant, preparing Mind, heart and soul for the Soon arriving High Holy Days. I will be at a different synagogue For the Holidays, (but back after) For many reasons, Which other somewhat mildly Observant Jews can easily imagine.
