Chatting with the Puppies on Leash
The puppies, I continue my theme, Are quite cute. Not my words, Although I agree, but those of the many And various folks who stop to chat On our daily walks. We stayed home the past few days, Ash, smoke, sirens, Bad air kept us in, Fear too of course Preparing to run if ordered. At last, we got out, walked around. Folks with other dogs chatted, Others came up to say hello, All said the puppies, only 8 months, Are quite cute. Many began to speak, telling Of quitting their homes with Only their dogs and bag. Others just needed to pet My beasties, needed Warmth, fur, a sweet look, A brief moment of tail wagged Respite from the gripping Anxiety, the drilling uncertainty. They needed to talk. I hope I listened right, I had nothing to offer. But my puppies did. No words, just wagging along. They all said the puppies Were quite cute. And when we parted, I noticed, They had A shadow of a smile, and Perhaps slightly uplifted shoulders. It nice to be useful, My pups whispered In my ear.
